  I love thinking about the questions at the edge of our knowledge, and making plans to answer them. It’s also quite exciting to be surrounded by smart, curious people all the time who are also fascinated by the mysteries of the universe. I feel challenged and humbled every day!

  I am curious about why things exist, why they happen, and how they interact with one another.
  Being a scientist is one way to explore these things.
  As a soil scientist I use physics (how things work), chemistry (how things are made), biology (how things live and grow), ecology (how earth systems interact with one another) and other sciences to study the world around me.

  I like it because it mixes my talents in analyzing things and numbers with creative thoughts like, “What if…?” or “Why does that happen?” I’m happy doing it, because there’s suspense – you never know when you will turn on “the lightbulb” in a student’s head, or find the answer to a tough science question.
