A few years after I finished my PhD, I was teaching at a university. My children were about 3 to 10 years old, and enjoyed watching Bill Nye, the Science Guy. Since I studied soil and most soil scientists are offended when people call soil dirt, my wife nicknamed me Dr. Dirt as a bit of a joke, and made a shirt for me that had Dr. Dirt on it. I have been Dr. Dirt ever since.
It is also a bit funny because my name is Clay, which is also a size of soil particle, and a type of soil. When I was a kid, my uncles always told me my name was mud. I thought they meant I was in trouble, and only later realized they were making a pun on my name.
