Of those options, I’d go with plants! They carpet our world in beautiful colors, give us delicious fruits and vegetables, make the oxygen we breathe, and provide the energy needed to support all other living things. They also have all sorts of fascinating adaptations to survive in the world, like eating insects, producing bitter or poisonous chemicals to keep animals from eating them, or partnering up with bacteria and fungi in the soil.

      Applied physics –
      Physics controls
      – how water moves through soil
      – how water is held in soil
      – how water evaporates from the soil surface
      – how water moves across the soil surface
      – how erosion occurs
      – how water moves through plants and into the atmosphere
      – how the soil stores heat
      – and so many other things

I love understanding how animals interact with their environment, with plants and soils being a huge part of that environment. I have studied mammals of all sizes from mice to elephants, birds, insects, fungi, and bacteria and how they interact with plants from singe-celled algae to trees. I’m fascinated by how and why animals move, how plants defend themselves against being eaten, how plants make “deals” with fungi and bacteria to acquire nutrients in exchange for sugar, and then how that makes plants more or less vulnerable to being eaten by animals. I’m increasingly interested in how geological history, such as volcanoes, rise and fall of sea level, soil aging, and climate determine the potential of soil and the potential life it can support.
