Systems and exploring.
The soil is the factor that integrates all terrestrial (land) ecosystems, and it also has a substantial effect on aquatic (fresh water) and marine (sea water) ecosystems, as well. It is the place where physics, chemistry, biology, geology, ecology, and meteorology meet.
So, I like walking across a landscape, observing the soil and plants and animals that live there, then going to another place, doing the same thing, and trying to understand why the differences I observe happen.
Earth science is fascinating because things are changing, sometimes REALLY slowly, think continental drift, but sometimes over the space of a few minutes, think tornadoes. No matter where you are there is a history written there if you just know where to look.
