I only have fictional role models, for better or worse. For instance, Rock Lee, from the anime Naruto is one of my role models. Like Rock Lee, I never really felt particularly smart or talented, but through hard work and dedication, I suppose I’ve become one of the finest ninjas (er I mean scientists) in the land.
Hmmm, that’s a good question. I never really thought about it.
I have a colleague who was one of my mentors at the university where I taught for 17 years. He retired at 62 after being the director of a USDA Agriculture Research Service laboratory for 25 years, then became the Dryland Agriculture Institute Director at the university, doing research and teaching a 2 or 3 courses a year. He is now 84, still works at the university, and runs 2 miles each day at noon. I want to be that sharp mentally and active physically at that age. But I will be riding a bike rather than running – I rode 5000 km last year.
There are many other scientists for whom I have a great deal of respect, not just for their science, but for who they are as people and educators.
I never really think about retiring, as in never doing anything anymore. I always will be curious. But, sometimes I think about opening an art/photography studio if I ever stop teaching and officially doing research.
Giggles.
So I guess you watch Naruto also. Have you seen the new episodes on NETFLIX yet?
i am still watching them. I have no idea how Rock Lee can do push ups just using his thumbs. Sasuke iz kind of dullwitted. Orochimaru creeps muh sister out.
